Green Factory/ Green Building
In addition to its ongoing efforts to improve the environmental performance of its automobile, motorcycle and power equipment products, Honda is working to reduce the environmental impact of its factories and other work facilities through its "Green Factories" and "Green Buildings" initiatives. This includes increasing energy efficiency, reducing waste and enhancing recycling activities. Through its "Green Purchasing" program, Honda also encourages and supports activities by its more than 600 North American OEM parts suppliers to adopt green factory programs.
North American Green Factory Initiatives
- Honda's Green Factory program leads every Honda facility to reduce emissions and energy use, reuse more raw materials and recycle manufacturing materials, paper and plastic.
- Honda's Marysville, Ohio, auto plant opened a new paint department that reduces energy use, waste, and emissions of volatile organic compounds.
- All of Honda's major North American manufacturing plants have earned third-party ISO 14001 certification for environmental performance (except a new plant - HPPG in Georgia).
- Energy use per automobile in Honda's North American automobile production facilities decreased approximately six percent from the previous fiscal year thanks to fuller utilization of production facilities along with ongoing efforts to improve plant energy efficiency, including the use of more energy-efficient light fixtures, use of variable speed drives in paint booth air handlers and motion sensors for turning lights on and off.
- Honda has three "zero waste to landfill" plants in America - the Alabama auto plant, North Carolina power equipment plant, and Georgia transmission plant (and also the Mexico auto plant). Overall, Honda reduced waste to landfill was reduced by approximately 17 percent last year.
Green Purchasing
- Honda encourages its suppliers to reduce packaging waste, adopt more energy-efficient processed and adhere to ISO14001 certification standards.
- Nearly 60 percent of Honda's total North American supply chain is ISO14001 certified.
North American Green Building Initiatives
- Two Honda facilities are Gold-level certified by the U.S. Green Building Council
- Central Plant facility at Honda R&D Americas Ohio Center in Raymond, Ohio
- American Honda's Northwest Regional Center in Gresham, Oregon
- Each facility features innovative sustainable concepts incorporated into the construction and operation of the facility.
- A significant portion of construction materials were harvested and manufactured locally, reducing fuel use and emissions associated with shipping.
- Rainwater harvested from the roof is stored and used to flush the low-flow toilets, reducing potable water consumption
- Renewable bio-diesel fuel is used to power the emergency generator with up to a 75 percent reduction in emissions compared to mineral-based diesel.
- Other innovative design features include passive heating and a wind-powered air conditioning system.
